Canine Influenza

Dog Flu. Huh?
Social dog? Using the kennel and boarding for summer vacation? Dog parks?
Maybe we should discuss CIV (Canine Influenza Virus).

The newest form of CIV H3N2 sounds pretty scary. So far, we have not had confirmed cases in the San Antonio area, but dozens of cases have been reported in Austin, Dallas, and Houston. When you’ve seen state and national news about canine flu outbreaks, this is likely the strain. It’s more contagious and the symptoms last longer than the first identified strain of CIV, and dogs are contagious before they even show symptoms!

For dogs who have exposure to random other dogs at a dog park, kennel, or even grooming salons, we always recommend vaccination for Kennel Cough (Bordetella and Canine Parainfluenza) and we now encourage you to strongly consider vaccination for the newest strain of CIV.
