Love your pet’s teeth | San Antonio Pets & Vets
Oh no, Fido has bad breath! Don’t turn your nose up and run. This could be a sign that Fido needs a dental. Love is in the air this month with Valentine’s Day upon us, but it is also a time to love your pet’s teeth!
What is February?
February is Pet Dental Health Month. Dental health is a very important part of your pet’s overall health, and dental problems can cause other health problems. Your pet’s teeth and gums should be checked at least once a year by your veterinarian to check for early signs of a problem and to keep your pet’s mouth healthy.
Pet Oral Health
Your pet’s teeth should be checked by your veterinarian for early signs of a problem and to keep your pet’s mouth healthy. Prevention is key and a yearly checkup is recommended.
The following problems should prompt a quicker visit.

- Extra teeth or retained baby teeth
- Teeth that are discolored or covered in tartar
- Abnormal chewing, drooling, or dropping food from the mouth
- Reduced appetite or refusal to eat
- Pain in or around the mouth

Cause of Pet Dental Problems
There can be several, but, the most common is Periodontal disease. Starting around the age of 3, your pet can start exhibiting the signs of Periodontal Disease. If left unchecked it can lead to other more serious health issues such as:
